Humber Keel & Sloop Preservation Society

Here are some of the developments within the society.

Since 2004 the council have been in great discussion about what the future will bring for the continuation of the ships as working examples within the historic ships register. For example, the requirement for new crew & masters is paramount for the ongoing preservation of not just the ships but for our society, & the new safety recommendation that the MCA have introduced for such vessels as ours has to be addressed.

So what’s been done?                                                                     Crew We have been, since the later part of 2003,  actively promoting interest from members who have been sailing with our ships & from the local community around South Ferriby, Barton & Hull to gain new regular crew members, that is to say people that we know have more than just a passing interest in the ships & we can call on to be regular crew. The transition from crewman to master is allot more in depth & the requirements that we have to meet these days dictates the masters would need RYA Yacht master to coastal level, both theory & practical, so its not an easy or quick step up from crewman.                          However, a potential 6 new crew members have been brought on board in this last season, & its hoped we will have a third skipper in the shape of Steve Shone for Comrade soon to assist Colin as sailing master & Jim as standby master.

MCA regs Both ships have been equipped with up to spec self inflating life jackets & both ships now carry two 10 man life rafts, fire equipment has been updated & the insurance will be revised  to bring both the ships into the same insurer by next season. (2007) The MCA has introduced a new regulation that will effect our ships, as from September 2008 all vessels carrying passengers must have a skipper that holds a Boatmasters certificate, this is to be issued by either the RYA or MCA. The requirements for the issue of the certificate mean our skippers will have to meet another four compulsory standards before it will be issued.

                                                       Other Stuff

June 2006. Amy has now had a successful trial with the replacement engine, after that she undertook a trouble free trip up the Trent to Keadby in order to be at Thorne for her survey. Chuck, our surveyor, was most impressed & Amy is now back in South Ferriby before going back into Barton Haven to have new stern gear fitted & the wiring replaced. It will be next year before Amy is back in full sailing trim.

Comrade is still sailing from South Ferriby & Steve, our new trainee skipper is learning the ropes from Colin, getting to know the feel of the ship & how to handle her under varied conditions. Steve has shown a dedication over the last couple of years that we are sure will prove to be an indication that he will stay the course & become another skipper for the society.

September 2007. Both ships have had a good seasons sailing Comrade & Amy attended the Hull Sea Festival along with other local ships Spider T, Phyllis, Southcliff, Onicimus, Dritan, Syntan & Vulcan.     In an attempt to offset the expenditure on Amy Howson last year she has sailed on every weekend & several evenings from South Ferriby between May & September, I must thank all her crew for giving their time & making it possible. Both ships have now gone to their winter moorings & will be chipped & painted ready for the start of the sailing season next May 2008. Our AGM will be in February, I will post the date when it is determined.
